Ngati Kahungunu ~ Ngati Porou ~ Rangitâne
Bronwyn Waipuka-Callander is a self-taught artist currently working in digital illustration. Originally from Masterton she has been practicing as a professional artist since her first exhibition in Adelaide back in 2004. After living in Australia for 12 years her return home to Aotearoa has renewed her passion for her Mâori heritage.
Her Giclee digital prints evolve around Mana Wahine (women of strength) with particular emphasis on Papatuanuku (Mother Earth). With many of her female images she likes to create a kind of ‘multiple’ story telling, stories that not only portray strong female characters, but have that historical or mythical Maori element to them. Reading about inspiring women in Maori history, and having been influenced by females within her own Whanau (family), has played an important role in her artistic philosophy and direction.
